Workshop on Combating Counterfeit Medicines in EAC

A Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 10 – 12 March, 2010. This event, titled “Combating Counterfeit Medicines in the East African Community (EAC)”, is being hosted by the United States Embassy in Tanzania and the United States Patent and Trademark Office in coordination with the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) of Tanzania, the body responsible for the promotion of fair competition in business and the protection of consumers.

Africa Matters Limited, which is actively promoting anti-counterfeiting in the region, has been in close touch with the organisers of this event. The workshop will draw participants from all the five Partner States in the EAC comprising Judges, Prosecutors, Police, Customs officers, health officials, the private sector and officials of the EAC Secretariat.

This three-day event will give participants insights on a range of topics, covering the following: the Impact of Counterfeit Medicines, the EAC Anti-Counterfeiting Policy; Innovative Approaches to Consumer and Stakeholder Education and Awareness; Building a Regional Enforcement Mechanism, Best Practices for Interdiction and Control Of Counterfeit; Consumer Goods at the Border; Judicial Perspectives on IP Enforcement Building a Case for Criminal Prosecution; and the Next Steps in Combating Counterfeit Medicines.
