East African Investment Conference
In March 2009 Africa Matters Limited – in conjunction with the City of London Corporation – hosted a two-day conference in London designed to highlight investment opportunities in East Africa.
The first day – a panel discussion intended to address common misconceptions of East Africa – was headlined by the Secretary General of the East African Community Ambassador Mwapachu, President Kagame of Rwanda, President Museveni of Uganda, President Karume of Zanzibar (representing the United Republic of Tanzania), First Vice-President Dr. Sahinguvu of Burundi, and Kenyan Minister for Trade Mr. Kimunya. The panel also included Baroness Lynda Chalker, Chairman of Africa Matters Limited and Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the UK’s Department for International Development.
International commerce had the unique opportunity of asking the panel questions on, as well as highlighting their own experiences of, the business environment in East Africa.
The second day – a hands-on tour of investment opportunities in the EAC region – featured presentations on commercial prospects in the sectors of Financial Services, Energy and Infrastructure, Tourism, Agro-processing, and ICT. The presentations were led by the Investment Authorities of the EAC member states.
Both conferences saw a diversity of western investors and businesses attend.
