Case Study I

Uganda Government Workshop for Ministers and Officials

The Issue

Working on behalf of two clients operating in the consumer goods sector in East Africa, AML was asked to advise and take action on counterfeiting in the region.

Both businesses had seen a serious decline in their sales in Uganda due, in large part, to the influx of counterfeit goods from China and the Far East. Local legislation, enforcement, and judicial bodies were ill-equipped to deal with the problem. Consequently, one client had been forced to close its manufacturing unit, the other to downscale its operations.

AML's Role

AML raised the issue at the Presidential Investors Round Table and subsequently arranged a workshop for all key stakeholders. The workshop was opened by the President and was attended by over 120 delegates, including 35 members of the Ugandan cabinet. The workshop identified a list of key issues and recommended actions that needed to be taken to address the problem. The Ugandan government is now following through on those recommendations.
